David Nelson: Passed Away

Nelson was born in New York City and moved to Los Angeles with his parents, where he attended Hollywood High School and the University of Southern California. Nelson died Tuesday at his home in the Century City area of Los Angeles.

When 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet' moved from radio to TV, he and Rick convinced their parents to be on the show.
'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet' aired on ABC from 1952 to 1966; many of the episodes were directed by Nelson, who was the last surviving member of the TV family. Nelson's film credits included 'Peyton Place,' 'The Remarkable Mr. Pennypacker,' 'The Big Circus' and 'The Big Show.'

In 1976 he co-starred with his mother in 'Smash-Up on Interstate 5.' His television credits included 'Up in Smoke,' 'The Love Boat,' 'High School USA' and 'A Family For Joe.'

His directing credits included 'O.K. Crackerby,' 'Childish Things,' 'Easy to Be Free,' 'Ozzie's Girls' and 'A Rare Breed.' Nelson was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1996. Nelson is survived by his wife, Yvonne; four sons and a daughter; and seven grandchildren. A service will be held Thursday at Pierce Brothers Westwood Mortuary.

But sometimes it can be difficult to visualize that value—to imagine how proximity might translate into profit. Thanks to a collaboration between Boston’s Skyhook Wireless and the organizers of this weekend’s San Francisco Marathon, it will be possible for anyone to track how thousands of marathon spectators access location-based services on their mobile devices.

Skyhook, which makes the Wi-Fi- and GPS-based positioning software inside the Apple iPhone and iPad and many other mobile devices, has created an online map that will show geotagged mobile activity along the route of the San Francisco Marathon, which starts at 5:30 am on Sunday, July 25. Everytime someone in the crowd—or in the race, for that matter—uses a Skyhook-powered app to get a location reading, Skyhook will show it on the map.

And when they send Twitter updates, browse or upload geotagged photos on Flickr, or check in on Foursquare, that information will show up too, in near-real time. (There will be a delay of up to two hours for processing, according to Kate Imbach, Skyhook’s vice president of marketing.) The map even comes with a history slider that allows visitors to see how the data evolves over time.

The marathon map is a public version of Skyhook’s location intelligence service, called SpotRank, which is designed to show population density based on location requests. Skyhook has done this type of thing before—first at the Boston Marathon in April, and again at the Country Music Association Music Festival in Nashville, TN, last month—but the San Francisco project is the most elaborate yet, supplementing Skyhook’s basic location-request data with information pulled in from Twitter, Flickr, and Foursquare.

Partly, it’s just an experiment—and a great marketing move, both for Skyhook and for partners hoping to move the geolocation business forward. “It’s new for us and new for [the San Francisco Marathon], and we don’t know exactly where it’s going, but we know it’s a new way to look at the urban environment in the context of mobile activity,” says Imbach. “Location requests are interesting, but when you add in the context of the social activity on mobile devices, it gets a lot more interesting….This type of data is potentially huge for advertisers.”

For example, it’s long been a vision of developers of location-based services to send discount offers over mobile channels to people who are near specific retail locations. The more context that’s available about what these people are doing or what they’re interested in, the more advertisers could tailor these offers.

The marathon map could also be interesting as a demonstration for urban planners, race course designers, or fans of individual runners, Imbach speculates. Aggregated geotagged data can also have unexpected uses. At the CMA Music Festival in Nashville, Imbach says, it was possible to determine which bands were playing at which stages—and even how excited the audiences were—simply by searching the tweets aggregated on Skyhook’s map for specific band names and for certain punctuation, such as exclamation points. Of course, the data on Skyhook’s maps is made anonymous and can’t be tracked to individual mobile users.

“Skyhook’s SpotRank map for The San Francisco Marathon allows us to provide a unique view into how the city of San Francisco adapts to the race,” said Lyz Luke, media coordinator for The San Francisco Marathon, in a statement. “The map creates a unique online hub for where spectators from all over the world can experience the excitement of the Marathon.”

The Rugged T.V Star Peter Graves has died in the age of 83 years. Peter started his career from the hit TV series “Mission Impossible”.

Peter found dead Sunday afternoon in front of his Pacific Palisades home from apparent natural causes, said Officer Karen Rayner of the Los Angeles Police Department.

Graves had just returned from brunch with his family to celebrate his upcoming 84th birthday. He collapsed on the driveway before he could reach his house, said Sandy Brokaw, his publicist. One of Graves’ daughters administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation but was unable to revive him, Brokaw said.

Graves starred in more than 70 television series and feature films, typically playing the straight-laced hero. One of his first major roles was in the 1953 classic, “Stalag 17,” in which he played an undercover Nazi spy placed among American POWs in a German camp.

His most memorable role was in “Mission: Impossible,” the 1960s CBS series in which he played intelligence agent James Phelps, leader of the elite Impossible Missions Force. The show ran from 1967 to 1973 on CBS and 1988 to 1990 on ABC.

Every week, Graves could be seen listening to a tape of instructions for carrying out his team’s secret missions. He won a Golden Globe in 1971 for his role.

Chicken Pot Pie

INGREDIENTS

* 1 cup all-purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1/2 teaspoon ground sage
* 1/4 teaspoon salt
* 2 tablespoons butter
* 1/3 cup cold nonfat milk
* 1 cup chopped onions
* 2 cloves garlic
* 1 cup chicken broth
* 1 1/2 cups potatoes, peeled and cubed
* 1 1/2 cups carrots, chopped
* 1 cup frozen mixed vegetables, thawed
* 1 (10.75 ounce) can reduced fat cream of chicken soup
* 1 1/2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
* 2 cups cooked, cubed chicken breast meat
* 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
* 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
* 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
* salt and pepper to taste

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).

2. To Make Crust: Mix together 1 cup flour, baking powder, sage, and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in butter or margarine until mixture is crumbly. Stir in milk. Gather dough into a ball, wrap in plastic, and allow to rest in refrigerator.

3. Spray a large nonstick skillet with cooking spray. Cook onions and garlic together over medium heat until soft, about 5 minutes. Add broth, potatoes, carrots, and mixed vegetables. Simmer partially covered for 12 minutes. Potatoes should be slightly undercooked.

4. In a small bowl, combine cream of chicken soup and flour. Mix until smooth. Add mixture to vegetables along with chicken, parsley, basil, thyme, salt, and pepper. Pour mixture into a 2 quart casserole dish.

5. Roll out dough to fit top of casserole dish. Lay dough over filling and prick with a fork several times.

6. Bake in preheated oven for 25 minutes, until crust is golden brown. Allow to sit 5 minutes before serving.

Chicken Curry

Ingredients

½ kg chicken
100 ml onion paste
50 ml. yogurt
1 tsp. coriander (Dhaniya) powder
3 to 4 tsp salt (to taste)
¼ tsp. turmeric (Haldi) powder
1 tsp chili (Lal Mirch) powder
1 tsp. garlic (Lehsan) paste
1 tsp. ginger (Adrak) paste
100 ml. oil
1 to 1½ tsp. salt (as per taste)
100 ml. tomato - ground
1-2 green chilies -chopped
1 tsp. garam masala. OR 1 black cardamom (Bari Ilaichi) seeds,
2 green cardamom (Chhoti Ilaichi) seeds,
1 small stick cinnamon (Dalchini)
10 black pepper (Kali Mirch)
6-8 cloves (Laung)
¼ tsp. cumin seeds (Zeera)
Garnish
2 tsp. fresh coriander (Dhaniya) leaves and green chilies (chopped)

Method

Fry onion paste in oil to light brown. Add Ginger (Adrak), Garlic (Lehsan) paste, yogurt, Coriander Seeds (Dhaniya) powder, chili powder, Turmeric (Haldi) powder, tomato, and salt.

Mix and fry briefly and then add the chicken.

Mix it and let it cook for 10-15 minutes till the chicken becomes tender and the desired consistency of curry is achieved. (add water only to have the required consistency)

Garnish with green chilies, green coriander (Dhaniya) leaves and garam masala.

Serve with naan or boiled rice.

Serving: 3 to 4 persons.

Bring your china cabinet into the living room. Remove the doors and merchandise it with books, accessories, and family photos mixed in with some of your china. This creates a great focal point in a room that is missing architectural focal points Hang a picture low between the bottom of the lampshade and the lamp table to create an element of surprise for the person seated in the chair.

Don't neglect the ceilings in your home. Plaint it (any colour but white) or or wallpaper it. Add some interesting wood moldings to create a faux tray ceilling look.

Float your furniture in a V-shaped arrangement instead of the predictable L. If rearranging furniture intimidates you, call sone of the talented decorators that call themselves One Day Decorators or interior redesigners.

Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif is down with jaundice and missing from the promotions for her latest outing De Dana Dan. And her co-star Akshay Kumar was prompt in wishing her speedy recovery.

Rumours were rife that the actress was rushed to Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai Monday night, where she was diagnosed with jaundice and has been advised complete bed rest for a while.

Asked if it were true, Akshay said, "Katrina is down with jaundice... We are missing her and hope she gets well soon."

Apparently De Dana Dan is Akshay and Katrina's sixth outing together after movies like Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye and back to back hits like Namastey London, Welcome and Singh Is Kinng. They also starred recently in underwater thriller Blue.

Akshay, who has had a string of flops this year with Chandni Chowk To China, 8x10 Tasveer, Kambakkht Ishq and Blue, is now keeping his fingers crossed for De Dana Dan.

"Our chemistry does work and we've seen the results in Singh Is Kinng and other films and we expect the same from this film too. This movie should do very well and I expect great returns for my producers. I have great expectations from this one," he said.

Akshay was here at the DT Cinema multiplex in Vasant Kunj to promote the movie with his co-stars Suniel Shetty, Neha Dhupia, Sameera Reddy and producer Sunil A Lulla.

Directed by Priyadarshan, De Dana Dan has also been produced by Ganesh and Girish Jain. It also stars Paresh Rawal in an important role.
