Early on Tuesday 16 October 1962, John F Kennedy's national security assistant, McGeorge Bundy, brought to the President's bedroom some high-altitude photographs taken from U-2 planes flying over Cuba. They showed Soviet soldiers hurriedly and secretly setting up nuclear-armed missiles.

For some time previously the Soviets had openly been sending weaponry to Cuba, including surface-to-air anti-aircraft missiles (SAMs). To deflect any criticism about this from the Republicans, who were busy campaigning for the November congressional elections, Kennedy had said he would not protest about such defensive weaponry being installed in Cuba, but warned that if the Soviets ever introduced offensive weapons, 'the gravest issues would arise.'

Since Soviet premier Nikita Khrushchev had promised repeatedly not to send offensive weapons to Cuba, and America's top intelligence analysts had predicted that he would keep his word, Kennedy felt safe in voicing this warning. The U-2 photographs, however, showed that Khrushchev had been lying. The 'gravest issues' were at hand.

The United States at the time had more than 25,000 nuclear weapons in their arsenal. The Soviet Union had not quite half as many. Kennedy's predecessor, Dwight Eisenhower, had calculated in 1960 that, if a crisis led either side to fire nuclear weapons, all humans in the northern hemisphere could perish. 'Gravest issues' indeed. Source and More Details

Walmart has joined the growing list of retailers with plans to kick off Black Friday a day early.

In an announcement today, the company said its Thanksgiving weekend sales would begin at 6 p.m. on Thursday, according to USA Today.

This trumps the sale start times of fellow retailers J.C. Penney and Macy's, both of which will begin sales at 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving evening. It also pushes the sales back earlier than last year, when Walmart began Black Friday at 8 p.m. on Thursday.

At least one other retailer has already announced even earlier sale start time than Walmart. USA Today reports Toys R Us plans to open its doors for Black Friday at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Walmart has been building hype for its Black Friday sales since the beginning of November, putting some items for sale on Walmart.com as early as November 1.

According to The Associated Press, Walmart and other retailers are responding in part to a shopping season that is six days shorter than usual. They are also forced to deal with shaken consumer confidence after the 16-day partial government shutdown.  Source and more details

Continuing with "secret" week on The Talk, Sara Gilbert revealed on Thursday's show that she kept her sexuality a secret throughout her years on the Roseanne sitcom.

Gilbert dated Johnny Galecki at the time. "And I thought he was super cute and had a total crush on him and we started dating and he would come over and we would make out and then I would start to get depressed," she said.

She felt Johnny started "taking it personally" until she told him she was gay. "He was super sweet about it."

He never told anyone, and Sara also kept her sexuality a secret throughout her years on Roseanne. The show aired from 1988 to 1997.

She also said that she was dating a woman 18 years older than her during this time. "No one knew at the show ,and Johnny held the secret the whole time. I was always so scared if it came out."

Doing The Talk has helped her overcome her fear of being public about being gay, but she reveals that part of her is still afraid there will be repercussions.

"When I talk about my sexuality on the show or in public, I still feel really scared. I'll try to act confident or make jokes of it. There's still a piece of me that goes, 'What is this costing me in my career? And what if ... '"

But she's grateful for her life.

"I want to live a true life. Beyond that, we do often say things like, 'It gets better' – and it does get better. I have an amazing life, but I want people to know that there can still be a struggle with it, and that's OK. There can be a part of you that doesn't want to feel different or feel scared. And that may be more important than any of it."

Gilbert said she alerted Galecki to the fact she'd be talking about it to him. His response was, " 'Yeah ... I love you, and I think it's really important. I'm so proud of you. If you want, I'll be there with you and I'll hold your hand.' I just thought that was so sweet." Source and More Details

Jared Remy charged for Slam Jennifer Martel’s as, He was in their grasp and then he was gone. Jared W. Remy was arraigned in Waltham District Court Wednesday on charges of slamming Jennifer Martel’s face into a mirror in their townhouse. But prosecutors declined to seek bail, allowing him to leave the court with nothing more than an order not to abuse Martel, with whom he lived and had a 4-year-old daughter.
The following night, police were called back to the townhouse in Waltham, where they found Remy covered in blood and Martel, his girlfriend, slashed to death beside a pink tricycle and other toys on their patio.

“If they had kept him, maybe my daughter would be alive today,” Martel’s mother, Patty, said in an interview. “But he went back and finished the job.”

On Friday, the top Middlesex prosecutor defended the decision to not seek bail for Remy earlier in the week.

“On Wednesday, a [bail] request was made based on the information that we had on Wednesday,” said Middlesex District Attorney Marian T. Ryan. “Obviously and tragically, there is different information today, Friday morning.’’
Friends and relatives said Martel, 27, an aspiring teacher who worked at a nearby Market Basket to provide for her daughter, had been trying to extricate herself from what she told them had become an abusive relationship with Remy, the son of famed Boston Red Sox player and broadcaster Jerry Remy.

“I talked to her on Wednesday; she said she was planning her escape,” said Patty Martel, who on Friday was driving from her home in Virginia to Massachusetts. “It started off she was very happy with him, but, as time went on, he showed his true colors, and it got worse and worse.”  Source and More Details

The FBI on Monday released an updated timeline of travels and crimes by Israel Keyes, a confessed Alaska serial killer who is believed to have killed 11 people before committing suicide in his jail cell last year.

The timeline sheds some new light on a mysterious case that left a trail of unsolved killings around the country. FBI spokesman Eric Gonzalez said the goal of releasing the information is to identify victims who remain unknown, and provide some closure to their families.

"We've exhausted all our investigative leads," Gonzalez said.

The FBI statement said that "Keyes traveled internationally and it is unknown if he committed any homicides while outside of the United States," the FBI statement said. Keyes was known to have traveled to Canada, Mexico and Belize between 2001 and 2008.

The FBI also set up an interactive map of Keyes' travel from 1997-2012.

The FBI documents said Keyes frequented prostitutes during his travels and killed an unidentified couple in Washington state sometime between July 2001 and 2005. Keyes also told investigators he committed two separate murders between 2005 and 2006, disposing of at least one of the bodies in Lake Crescent, near Port Angeles, Wash.  Source and More Details

A 1912 eighth-grade exam was donated to a museum in Bullitt County, Ky.

The Bullitt County Genealogical Society put a scanned copy of the 1912 eighth-grade exam on its website today.

This exam was called the "Common Exam" in 1912 and was "apparently a big deal," according to the Society's description of the scanned document. Students in Bullitt County would come to the county courthouse once or twice a year to take the exam.

For passing the exam, students could be given scholarships to attend high school ("which was also a big deal back then," the site says).

The exam consists of 56 questions, a 40-word spelling test, and mentions a separate reading and writing test.

The test quizzed students on mathematics, grammar, geography, physiology, civil government, and history. Source and More Details

Today was bad news for every new film except great news for Warner Bros/New Line’s The Conjuring (playing in 2,903 theaters) which not only opened #1 with a $40M weekend on tap but made $3.3M from Thursday late shows and Friday midnights. Horror flick also received a coveted ‘A-’ CinemaScore which should help word of mouth. That’s an unusually good grade for the genre where ‘D’ and ‘F’ have become commonplace. Lionsgate/Summit Entertainment’s Red 2 (3,016 theaters) received a strong ‘B+’ CinemaScore so today’s soft opening could become stronger Saturday if more adults turn out due to good word of mouth. Universal was expecting its Jonah Hex-meets-Men In Black retread R.I.P.D. (2,852 theaters) to rest in agony this weekend after long delays.

So lousy reviews and its low ‘C+’ CinemaScore were no surprise. Still, it’s a financial disaster because of its too-big budget: my sources say it cost $182.1M but the production rebate was $28.1M so the aggregate net negative to Universal $154M. At least the studio has humongous worldwide profits from Despicable Me 2 to console it. Finally, DreamWorks Animations’  original non-sequel Turbo (3,806 theaters) which opened Wednesday will have the toon company’s worst opening since company started (figuring in inflation, higher ticket prices, and the 3D premium.) Then again, these animated pics have 4x-5x multiples around the globe so distributor Fox isn’t going to count it out yet. Source and More Details

The deposition given by former wrestler and Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura will need to be made public, partially or in whole, a federal judge ordered Thursday.

Ventura is suing deceased Navy SEAL Chris Kyle for allegedly libeling him in his bestselling book "American Sniper."

Chief U.S. Magistrate Arthur Boylan ruled the deposition was never meant to be confidential, so a version of it should be made available to the public. Ventura's lawyers, however, will have the opportunity to determine if certain parts should be kept private. Source and More Details

World Trade Centre brings in our mind a lots of memories which we can never forget. Today we are going to spread light on the issue of the owner of  The World Trade Centre.  The owners of the World Trade Center can't demand billions of dollars more in insurance money for the destruction caused by the Sept. 11 attacks, a federal judge decided Thursday.
Judge Alvin Hellerstein ruled after hearing testimony by economic experts for the trade centre owners and for the airlines linked to the planes that were hijacked in the attacks. The non-jury trial was held to decide whether the owners could collect more than the nearly $5 billion they've already received toward reconstruction.

In ruling against developer Larry Silverstein and World Trade Center Properties, the judge cited state laws that bar "windfalls and double recovery on the same loss."
The judge said that though he was ruling against the trade centre owners, they deserved credit for spearheading the recovery effort at the 16-acre lower Manhattan site.
"You were dealt a very severe blow," the judge said of the attack, which turned the trade centre into an inferno and destroyed the twin towers. Since then, the developer's workers have laboured to "create beauty out the ashes of the destruction," he added.

A spokesman for Silverstein Properties said the developer was "deeply disappointed" by the ruling and would appeal but remains committed to the ongoing construction projects on the site.
"We will not rest until we have exhausted every option to assure that the aviation industry's insurers pay their fair share toward the complete rebuilding of the World Trade Center," said the spokesman, Bud Perrone. Source and more details

Two people have been shot at a Costco store in Loudoun County, Va., officials said on Wednesday afternoon.

A Costco food service employee, 38-year-old Mhai Scott of Sterling, VA was reportedly wielding a knife and scissors and threatening employees at the store, officials said.

Witnesses called the police and they showed up when the employee became threatening with the knife to police, officials said in a news conference.

Renee Haber works at Costco, saw she had a knife on her and was frightening her supervisor said the woman was "just making strange comments about the pizza." The Loudoun County Sheriff, Mike Chapman, says the deputies used a TASER on the woman, but that didn't really slow her down. That's when one of the deputies fired at the woman, police said.

The woman was killed, as a result of the shooting, and another deputy was shot in the leg, Chapman said.

The deputy who was taken to the hospital, is in good condition and has since been released.  Police are investigating the incident on the scene of the Sterling, Va. Costco.

Another witness, Robert Krause, said "I was at the front of the building I saw some officers run into Costco and a few minutes later there were some gunshots, about 5 of them." Source and More Details

Representative Michele Bachmann, the Minnesota Republican whose status as a leading Tea Party voice in Congress has faded in the wake of a failed bid for president and a widening investigation into her campaign spending, said Wednesday that she would not seek re-election.Mrs. Bachmann, defiant as ever as she insisted that she would have won re-election had she tried, said the legal inquiries had nothing to do with her decision. She vowed to continue to fight for the principles she said she holds dear: religious liberty, traditional marriage, family values and opposition to abortion.

“I fully anticipate the mainstream liberal media to put a detrimental spin on my decision not to seek a fifth term,” she said in a gauzy network-television quality video posted on her campaign Web site. “They always seemed to attempt to find a dishonest way to disparage me. But I take being the focus of their attention and disparagement as a true compliment of my public service effectiveness.”

Like other conservative politicians with a national profile — Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Rick Santorum — Mrs. Bachmann may find numerous options, many of them lucrative, available to her in talk radio, television, advocacy for conservative causes and the speaking circuit.

Given the uncertain political and legal paths that she faced, a new career in the private sector may have presented a more attractive option.  Source and More Details

A small explosion Tuesday in a Disneyland trash can that appeared to be caused by dry ice in a bottle brought evacuations but no damages or injuries, officials and witnesses said.
The blast was reported at about 5:30 p.m. in the Mickey's Toontown area of Disneyland, Anaheim police spokesman Sgt. Bob Dunn said.

Disneyland officials on the park's Twitter account called the explosion "a small bang," and said that "in an abundance of caution, the area was evacuated." They said they were working with local authorities.Anaheim police investigated with assistance from an Orange County sheriff's bomb squad.

About two hours after the explosion the review was completed, the area was deemed safe and guests were allowed to return to Toontown, Disneyland said.

Park visitor Allen Wolf says he was about 20 feet from the blast, near Toontown's City Hall.

Wolf said "it sounded louder than a gunshot," but similar.

"I looked up. Everyone stopped and looked up," Wolf said. "Security surrounded the trash cans then told everyone they were evacuating."

He said the park's music never stopped playing.

Mickey's Toontown, designed to make visitors feel like they've entered an old-fashioned cartoon, "is an interactive metropolis full of topsy turvy architecture and screwy sculptures," according to the Disneyland website.  Source and More Details
