Ariel Castro , the man who kidnapped, raped and abused for a decade to three women in Cleveland (Ohio, USA ) , appeared today hanged in his cell , barely a month after he was sentenced to prison for life .
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of his death , since the defendant was under close surveillance , but did not have protection against suicide.
Castro , 53 and Puerto Rican descent, received the August 1st sentenced to life imprisonment without parole for the most serious charge he faced , the aggravated murder for beating a women in captivity until cause an abortion.
For the rest of the nearly 1,000 positions, including hundreds of rape , Castro received several consecutive sentences totaling another 1,000 years in prison.
The ruling responded to his plea agreement with prosecutors agreed defense for Castro to get rid of the death penalty.
The day of judgment , the convicted apologized to his victims at the start of the hearing.
" I'm not a monster. 'm Sick ," he said . "I think I am also a victim ," he said wearing the orange jumpsuit typical of inmates and a prominent chin.
Castro told then that he had been sexually abused as young and also spoke of his addiction to pornography.
" I'm not trying to make excuses . Know that I acted badly, but I'm not a violent person ," he said .
Castro reported that in the house where he kept kidnapped the three women had "harmony" and that allegations of sexual abuse were "false " , since, according to him, "many times " they asked him to have sex .
But Judge Michael J. Russo, to read his sentence, he was emphatic : " You three women separated from their families and their communities, made slaves and treated them as if they were people."
The three women , Michelle Knight , Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus , were kidnapped by Castro in 2002 , 2003 and 2004 and were released in May.
Knight spoke between sobs in the audience and said that Castro "stole " 11 years of his life, he could forgive , but "never" forget what happened , and he deserved to spend the rest of his life in prison .
"I cried every night , the years became an eternity " recalled Knight to remember that when she was kidnapped in 2002 had a son just two years he was " very lonely " .
On May 6 , in a careless Castro , Berry managed to escape and call for help loudly.
A neighbor, Charles Ramsey , came to the rescue and helped the young woman to break the door of the house where he was kidnapped.
Berry then revealed that the house had more people held against their will : DeJesus , Knight and his own daughter , six years old , the result of the abuses of Castro .
After the rescue the neighbors were amazed and said that at no time suspected that Castro could be responsible for the kidnapping , two of which , those in DeJesus and Berry, were well known by the community.
DeJesus parents of Puerto Rican descent, organized vigils at each anniversary of his death , on April 2 .
The case of Berry, whose mother died in 2006 of a heart attack , was open because during these years were clues that ultimately did not work .
